One of my favorite birds, budgies are great for beginners as well as experienced bird owners. Playful and talkative, they will perch on a finger but prefer to play and explore on their own instead of riding around on a shoulder as the larger parrots do.

Budgies always do better in pairs and groups due to their high flock drive, but will be fine as a single as long as they get lots of out of cage time and interaction each day. They are always playing and chattering with each other, and can be trained to talk and do complicated tricks.

Budgies require a cage at least 24inches across the front, and 18 inches deep and 18 inches high, although a cage 30 inches across the front is preferred. Smaller cages will increase stress and can cause unwanted behaviors, and make for an unhappy birdie.

They also benefit greatly from fresh veggies or chop several times a week, and will happily plow through just about anything put into their cage. Whole carrots or cobs of corn, heads of lettuce and slices of apples will disappear rapidly, especially in a community cage.
